Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Your health cover while study in Australia!
As an international student in Australia, you are required to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of your study in Australia. But there are also other types of insurance which you may find useful.
International students undertaking formal studies in Australia, and their dependents (for example, spouses and children under 18 years old), must obtain OSHC. It includes cover for visits to the doctor, some hospital treatment, ambulance cover and limited pharmaceuticals (medicines). OSHC insurers can provide a range of different OSHC products. These may range from a basic product which covers only the compulsory minimum services to comprehensive products which cover, in addition to the compulsory minimum services, extra services as specified under the particular policy.
The Department of Home Affairs requires overseas students to maintain OSHC for the duration of time they are in Australia.

How much does OSHC cost?
How much you pay for OSHC depends on the type of cover you need. We offer OSHC for:
- Singles – covering only the overseas student who is the primary Student Visa holder*
- Dual family – covering the overseas student, and either:
- One adult spouse or de facto partner
- One or more children under the age of 18 years old
- Multi-family – covering the overseas student and more than one dependant, which can include:
- Only one adult spouse or de facto partner
- One or more dependent children
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is health insurance that provides cover to contribute towards the costs of: Out of hospital medical treatment. In hospital medical treatment. Prescription Medicines. OSHC is required for all student visa types and its minimum cover is guaranteed by Australian government.
What’s Covered by Overseas Student Health Cover
Hospital
- 100% of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee for medical services provided in hospital
- Public hospital shared ward accommodation for overnight or same-day hospital stays
- Private hospital accommodation (for hospitals that have a contracted rate with Australian Health Services Alliance)
- Surgically implanted prostheses up to the approved amount listed on the Australian Prostheses List
Ambulance
- You’re covered for emergency ambulance transport to hospital for admission and on-the-spot emergency treatment
Doctors and specialists (out of hospital)
- 100% of the MBS fee for medical services provided by a General Practitioner (GP)
- 85% of the MBS fee for medical services provided by a specialist (e.g. visiting a radiologist to get an x-ray)
- 85% of the MBS fee or other medical tests (e.g. blood tests)
Prescription medicines
- Up to $50 per approved prescription medicine
- Up to $300 each year for singles
- Up to $600 each year for families or couples
