ABOUT MIGRATION AGENTS

Registration & Experience

The most important thing to know when engaging an Australian Migration agent is that they must be registered with the Office of Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) in order to legally provide you with immigration advice and assistance.

IT IS NOT LEGAL IN AUSTRALIA!

In Australia Migration Agents must be registered in order to provide immigration assistance services. There are reasons for it. The Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) registers and regulates migration agents. Regardless type of visa- long or short, temporary or permanent, work or student- choose legitimate professionals.

BEFORE MAKING DECISION – LEARN WHY YOU SHOULD USE  A REGISTERED AGENCY

Perks of using a registered agent:

  • Know about Australia’s immigration law and procedures

  • Can provide immigration advice, and recommend a suitable pathway

  • Will lodge a well-prepared application with all required documents which can make it easier and faster to get a decision on your visa

  • Is bound by code of conduct and must provide accurate advice

  • Must keep your money in a separate account like a trust account until the work is performed

  • Must inform you about your chances and outcomes in a timely manner

  • Has access to official guideline of Immigration policies and regulations

  • Is held accountable for advice, actions and results

  • Must meet training, practice and performance annual review requirements to stay up to date with legislation and to keep their licence

What can happen if you don’t use a registered agency:

  • May have limited knowledge about Australia’s immigration law and procedures

  • May give incorrect advice, make unrealistic promises, or take advantage of your situation

  • May not handle your money properly (some unregistered migration agents have defrauded large amounts of cash from clients)

  • Is not bound by any legislation regulating services provided

  • Your money may be kept on every day business account which is not protected from fraud

  • If something goes wrong, you have nobody to complain to

  • As no licence is held, there is no guarantee of proper training, knowledge, responsibility

WHO IS A MIGRATION AGENT?

Migration agents are trained professionals who have completed a Postgraduate Course, hold a current licence, and meet relevant registration criteria

  • It is the same as with lawyers, accountants and doctors
  • You may defend yourself, do your own taxes and use doctor google to get better. Sometimes it works, sometime it doesn’t.
  • The question is how much risk do you want to take?
  • Choosing the right agent is also a tricky business
Registered migration agents must meet professional standards, follow the Code of Conduct, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of migration law and procedure. It is illegal for anyone to give immigration assistance in Australia if they are not registered with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority. This video will help you understand what you can expect if you use a registered migration agent. For more information go to http://www.mara.gov.au

All migration agents are expected to:

  • Act professionally, have a good knowledge of migration laws and perform in a timely manner
  • Detail all costs involved (including written confirmation)
  • Keep you up to date with the application and progress
  • Keep information confidential
  • Abide by the migration agents’ Code of Conduct
