Vocational English Language Requirements

Vocational English is a level of English proficiency required for certain Australian visas, especially those related to work and skilled trades. Vocational English demonstrates a moderate level of proficiency, enabling applicants to communicate effectively in familiar workplace and social situations. Below are the visas where vocational English is required or relevant:

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)

  • Short-term Stream: Vocational English may be required depending on the occupation and stream.
  • Medium-term Stream: Applicants often need at least vocational English to meet eligibility criteria.

Employer-Sponsored Visas

  • Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186): Vocational English may suffice for some streams, particularly in trade occupations, unless exemptions apply.

Skilled Migration Visas

  • Regional Skilled Visa Programs: Some regional visas may accept vocational English as a minimum requirement, depending on the occupation and location.

Graduate Work Stream Visas

  • Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485): Vocational English may be accepted for the Graduate Work Stream if linked to trade occupations.

Additional Information

Vocational English is typically assessed through recognized language tests such as IELTS, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT. The required test scores for vocational English are generally lower than those for proficient or superior English. It allows applicants to demonstrate functional communication skills sufficient for entry-level positions in specific occupations or trades.
