Competent English Language Requirements
Competent English is the minimum English language proficiency required for many Australian visas, particularly those in the skilled migration category. Competent English is assessed through recognized language tests such as IELTS, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT and reflects the ability to communicate effectively in most everyday and workplace situations. Below are the visas where competent English is required or beneficial:
Skilled Migration Visas
Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189): Competent English is the minimum requirement for eligibility but does not earn points on the GSM points test.
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190): Meeting competent English requirements is necessary for eligibility.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491): Applicants must demonstrate competent English to apply.
Employer-Sponsored Visas
Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186): Competent English is generally required unless exemptions apply (e.g., long-term employment history in Australia).
Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482): Some occupations or streams may accept competent English as the language requirement.
Graduate Visas
Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485): Competent English is required for applicants in most streams.
Partner Visas
Onshore and Offshore Partner Visas (Subclass 820/801 and 309/100): Applicants or sponsors may need to show competent English to meet certain legislative requirements or avoid additional fees.
Business and Investor Visas
Business Innovation and Investment Visa (Subclass 188): While not always mandatory, demonstrating competent English can reduce the second visa installment fee.
Additional Information
Competent English does not award points under the GSM points test but satisfies the baseline language requirements for eligibility in most skilled migration categories. For applicants from countries where English is the primary language (e.g., UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand), competent English can often be established without a test, based on citizenship or education history.
Competent English is a fundamental threshold ensuring applicants can effectively communicate and integrate into Australian society and the workforce.
